Clarence E. Blackman – An Exemplar of Pathfinder Leadership

07 Feb 2022 | Auckland D. Flemming

“He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”  Micah 6: 8 sums up the sacrificial leadership of Clarence E. Blackman Sr., a former Pathfinder Director of the Central Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church, on St. Croix.  His name and life are synonymous with pathfindering at the Central SDA Church. Although his official title was Director Blackman, he, affectionately, became known by his “official” nickname of “Blacky”.

On November 27, 2021, the church hosted “Reflections on His Legacy”, and members, as well as youth leaders, shared how they were positively influenced by this honest and decent Christian leader, whose tenure began in the early 1970’s. Those who knew him best, thanked God for preserving the life of a man filled with integrity. That integrity afforded him the luxury of being able to operate as a leader beyond contestation or reproach. While Director Blackman led the club, attendance at Pathfinder Club meetings was at an all-time high as nobody needed to encourage or beg parents to send their children to meetings.

Brother Blackman’s demeanor was very strict and was paired with a winsome personality that earned the trust and respect of Pathfinders and their parents.  That trust and respect carried over to the other church offices he held, such as Master Guide Leader.  He would challenge youth to give of their best when he was convinced of their potential.   Once he deemed Pathfinders ready for investiture and the Master Guide class, the decision was not questioned.  Under the leadership of Director Blackman, a few traits were instilled into, and are still the hallmarks of, the Central Pathfinder Club – these included respect, humility, integrity, honesty and trust. He impacted the lives of so many youth, who were nurtured by the Central SDA Church.

We thank Director Clarence “Blacky” Blackman for his years of selfless service to the youth, and pray that his service will receive commendation from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
